The used trailer inspection checklist

01Structure

Chassis and drawbar straight, no bends or cracks
Rust: surface (usually fine) versus scaling, flaking or holes
Welds neat and original, or repaired professionally
Body, floor and roof sound

02Running gear

Wheel bearings: no play, no grinding
Tyres: age code, tread, sidewall cracks, matching sizes, spare
Springs and shackles intact, no sagging
Brakes (if fitted): operate, no seizing, breakaway system works

03Coupling and connection

Coupling latch and safety pin work smoothly
Safety chains and shackles in good condition
Jockey wheel winds up and down
Plug and socket match your tow vehicle

04Lights and fittings

Tail, brake, indicator and number-plate lights all work
Reflectors and wiring tidy, no taped-up joins
Locks, latches and tie-downs working

05Identification and paperwork

Compliance plate present and legible; details match registration
VIN or chassis number matches the paperwork
Current registration, or a plan for it (rules vary by state)
Receipts for work, if available

06Before you pay

Run a PPSR search for money owing
Get the agreed price, inclusions and condition in writing
Keep a receipt that names both parties and the VIN

Red flags

Red flag	What it might mean
Fresh paint on one section only	Repair or rust being covered; ask why
Missing or sanded plate	Compliance and ownership questions; walk away until resolved
Seller refuses an inspection	Something may be being hidden
Price well below similar listings	Possible scam or hidden fault; see the ACCC and Scamwatch guidance
