Paperwork, PPSR and proof of ownership
The trailer can be perfect and the sale can still go wrong. Paperwork is how you find out.
Ask the seller for
- Photo ID matching the name on the registration or receipt
- Current registration papers (if the trailer is registered)
- Compliance plate details and VIN or chassis number
- Previous receipts, service records or modification paperwork
- A written receipt for the sale, with both parties’ details
What a PPSR search does
The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is the national register where security interests in personal property, including vehicles and trailers, can be recorded. A search by VIN or serial number can show whether a lender has registered an interest in the trailer. If one is registered and you buy anyway, the lender may still have a claim over it. The search is run through the government-run PPSR website; check its current fee and how it works before you search.
State rules differ
Registration, transfer and roadworthy requirements vary from state to state and by trailer weight. Check your state or territory transport authority for what applies to your purchase.
If you are borrowing
A lender will normally want details of the trailer, such as make, year and VIN, and may need the seller’s details for private sales. Having the paperwork ready may help things run smoothly. For a general overview see ASIC MoneySmart, or start an enquiry with Fast Funding (free, no obligation).
